Often regarded as the worlds best medium telephoto zoom lens, the 70-180mm T2.9 Leica Vario APO-Elmarit-R is something special.

Optically excellent all through the range from wide open, the 70-180mm lacks field curvature and is well corrected. It renders images in a pleasing tone, and performs equally to the Leica-R primes. Like the primes, it is higher in contrast capable of displaying clear differentiation even of intricate color gradations.

A lens of complex design with 13 lens elements in 10 groups, while 12 of those elements use different glass... 5 of them being special glass with anomalous partial dispersion.

Leica only produced this lens from 1997 until 2005, with only 1900 or so ever made. So it's also on the rather special side from that end.
