TRIBE7 is a new company setup in partnership between Bradford Young ASC and Neil Fanthom formerly ARRI’s Director of Technology behind the DNA series of lenses for Alexa 65.
Purpose-designed for large format motion picture imaging, BLACKWING7 lenses from TRIBE7 represent an
entirely new range of tuned optics for contemporary film makers to use within their creative story telling.
BLACKWING7 optics exhibit unique imaging properties which arise from the introduction of controlled distortion
during the development and manufacturing processes. This distortion is modular and allows a level of tuneability
over key parameters which shape many creative characteristics of the lenses.
The lens range comprises ten focal lengths: a core set of seven plus three additional wide lenses. All lenses are
offered in three tuning options per focal length, configurable at point of manufacture.
BLACKWING7 lens tuning allows parameters such as sharpness, contrast, roll-off, spherical aberration, field
curvature, edge halation and flare to be modified to provide sets of “curated” optics to suit the personality and
intent of the owner.
Many of the design cues for BLACKWING7 primes originate in optics manufactured during the 1930 - 1960s, but
the real inspiration behind the lenses lies in the evolutionary nature of experimental music and audio synthesis,
and the process of creating distortion through sound amplification.
Conceptually, the ability to tune each BLACKWING7 lens is identical to how EQ adjustment is used in music
production - to control the range, or shape of tonality in specific bands across the audio frequency spectrum.
The image produced by a BLACKWING7 lens can be described as having a musical fidelity to it; with each focal
length having an underlying level of distortion which can be controlled to produce strong artistic resonances
including unique flaring characteristics.
Ten sets of BLACKWING7 BINARIES were created by TRIBE7 to help introduce the film making community to
the concept of audio merging into imaging. These limited-edition BINARIES are named in recognition of creative
imaging not being a black or white process – film makers accessing a wide choice of optics is essential to serve
creative storytelling. BLACKWING7 BINARIES have been widely used on commercials, music videos, TV and
feature productions and all feedback from these unique lenses has contributed to the production tuning of the
BLACKWING7 prime lenses which are now shipping.
T TRANSIENT Tuning
T-tune BLACKWING7 primes are very much the workhorse lenses in the BLACKWING7 range. They have a tuning profile which further exaggerates contrast roll-off to the edge of the frame and provides increased edge halation. T lenses have a unique personality and are signed to render a slightly softer, more artistic image, with a higher degree of light reactivity and more vibrant flaring characteristic due to the use of vintage-style single-coated optics.

Tuning Details
The 27-T has the highest central sharpness of all BLACKWING7 T-variants, with good rectilinear imaging, subtle halation, low breathing and good field illumination across the frame.

Tuning Details
The 37-T has a large image circle, suitable for 65mm format capture, has good central contrast and the strongest pupil flare characteristic of all the BLACKWING7 T-tuned lenses. The overall look of the 37-T is unique within the BLACKWING7 range.

"The 47 proves to be way more than the sum of its parts. It speaks to the vision and philosophy of its creators, who championed a simplicity in design that shines through in the authenticity of the images it produces. The results speak for themselves; images from a lens that resolves beautifully and has a nuanced gentle fall off to a creamy bokeh. And most importantly performs best wide open. So impressive."
- BEN SERESIN BSC ASC, Cinematographer
Tuning Details
The 47-T has softer halation properties than the 57-T, with more controlled flare and shallower roll-off across the frame. The 47-T is the workhorse BLACKWING7 focal length for large format 35mm capture.

"There is something ethereal and dimensional about the 57 T tuned lens that has my mind thinking about glass in a whole new way. I find myself lighting and blocking setups conscientiously to embrace the flare and falloff of this lens. There have been entire days when the 57 never left our camera."
- DOUG EMMETT,
Cinematographer
Tuning Details
The 57-T has a high level of edge halation wide open, and a smooth, soft image with a creamy overall look as the lens is stopped down. The 57-T has a vibrant lenticular flare characteristic similar to the 37-T, and is a hero focal length for 65mm format capture.

Tuning Details
The 77-T offers beautiful, almost painterly imaging qualities. The lens has low contrast and is creamy-smooth wide open, with a subtle level of edge halation, and accentuated roll-off.

Tuning Details
The 137-T has characteristics like the 107-T BLACKWING7 prime, with good flare control and slightly higher contrast. Though well and truly a telephoto focal length, wide open the lens has a subtle softness and retains the BLACKWING7 vintage “look”.
