Blackmagic Design Announces New Cintel Scanner G3 HDR+ 8/16 at NAB 2025

NAB 2025 saw Blackmagic Design announced the all-new Cintel Scanner G3 HDR+ 8/16, specifically designed to support high-quality scanning of 8mm HD and 16mm Ultra HD film. Engineered with a completely redesigned optical assembly, the new scanner delivers higher resolution images from these smaller formats—ideal for digitizing archived and historical footage. It retains the proven capstan drive system, offers real-time HDR film scanning, and includes both 8mm and 16mm film gates.

As larger televisions become standard in homes, demand for Ultra HD content continues to surge. Over the past century, studios have accumulated millions of hours of film, much of which remains in vaults. Digitizing this material provides an accessible and cost-effective path to delivering UHD content to modern audiences. With the Cintel Scanner, both negative and positive film can be scanned into beautifully sharp Ultra HD—unlocking detail that’s often gone unseen. It’s one of the easiest ways to create UHD masters for both feature films and television.

The Cintel Scanner G3 HDR+ 8/16 features a world-class high-intensity light source and advanced color science to produce incredibly sharp, high-quality images—even when scanning in real time. Its RGB LED grid array works in harmony with a highly sensitive imaging sensor, protecting film from thermal stress and the color fading typically caused by traditional scanner lamps. The updated light source also adds an impressive 3.5 stops of HDR. A new film inspection mode lets users view the original film side by side with the enhanced scans, highlighting the dramatic improvements in image quality.

Supporting both 8mm and 16mm formats, the scanner includes interchangeable gates for each, empowering users to create high dynamic range digital masters with superior color, texture, and detail. It integrates seamlessly with DaVinci Resolve Studio, which is included, and offers a powerful suite of restoration tools—automatic dirt and dust removal, deflickering, smart fill spot repair, and advanced temporal and spatial noise reduction—giving users everything they need for scanning, color correction, restoration, and mastering.
